The Goabase turns 30!
29 abr 26 ·It all started in May 1996 with a small, scanned collection of flyers and the first dates typed up.
And actually I didn't have much more in mind, but then one thing led to another... and it was just fun: creating a website that does exactly what I (and others) need for party dates. From Nov. 97, organisers were able to enter their parties, initially even without registering, as the member area only appeared 2.5 years later, a newsletter appeared with the new dates, etc. etc.
(The details can be found at Noticias de la Goabase - and the content at Mapa del sitio)
For the first few years, Goabase was in English and was therefore used as an international platform early on. The 00s were quite a push. There were other Goa websites, people connected and exchanged ideas. The opportunity to write in meeting points or see current photos attracted people. In the really strong months, there were over 10 million visitors and 1,400 "Upcoming Events".
Event organisers and shops even asked if they could advertise here. There were a few years with Google Ads and a self-coded ad system.
With Facebook and smartphones, the numbers slowly fell to around 450-500 current events. Six years ago, Corona then imposed a general forced break on the whole thing, even the newsletter was temporarily switched off. However, this also meant that advertising was switched off again - which in turn saved the (annoying) cookie banner.
There are now 300-350 parties in 40+ countries again. The log files fluctuate between 1-1.25 million visitors and Google reports over 70,000 clicks per month. The current event figures can be found on the homepage goabase ॐ fiestas y personas.
So if there are parties, it's probably here ;)
A few more figures
In the course of time, almost 200,000 accounts have been registered, over 100,000 events entered, over 450,000 photos uploaded, almost 850,000 posts written at the parties (Meetingpoints+Reports), almost 70,000 member pictures saved and over 1.7 million entries written in the forum.
The record for the party newsletter was 52,180 recipients in Nov. 2018, with more than 45,000 being sent out every week from summer 2014.
The self-developed PHP code now consists of around 100,000 lines for the front and back end, and 5,000 lines of "self-coded" JavaScript are required - which may sound "powerful", but has also taken a long time from PHP2/FI(!) to date.
I am very happy that it has been running for so long, that so much has happened in this way and that we can share it here. Together we have created something. It's a little different for everyone, but for most people it's going in the same direction.
I would like to thank everyone who has helped me in one way or another, code supplements, moderators, bug finders, translation help... Without your support this would never have been possible. Last but not least, I would also like to thank all the donors Gracias. There is rented hardware at a hoster and if I can buy a coffee or two, it motivates me even more :)
So I'm also happy about all the new people who join and participate.
And it goes on: parties are "basically always on" and there's always something to do with the code - otherwise it wouldn't be so much fun. There are also plans for an Italian translation and a new app, and a WordPress plugin has also been started. Anyone who would like to contribute something is welcome to contact me.
Here's to the next 30 years ;)

Webmaster / Coder of the whole thing
